Brixton Road Flat

Located between the vibrant neighbourhoods of Brixton and Stockwell, the Grade II listed terrace maisonette was refurbished and enlarged with a simple glazed two storey extension in 2009.

East-facing, the structural glass façade allows more sunlight to the basement as well as reflecting the morning sun back into the garden, casting shadows on the rusted metal-clad retaining wall of the excavated basement garden. The extension includes an element of black-stained hardwood, with doors to the garden at ground and basement levels.

The ground floor is open-plan with the new glass extension becoming the dining space. The use of exposed concrete links link the old and new parts of the property – concrete worktops to the kitchen and a concrete hearth within the living area.

At basement level the original accommodation has been transformed with the creation of a new master suite. The bedroom and bathroom share the same space, a bespoke iroko bath and sink sitting cosily to the side. Full height glazing at one end of the room gives views of (and opens up onto) a courtyard garden with a water feature which features a rill and waterfall created from a steel RSJ. A tree fern provides a sense of green privacy and a magnificent view.

The gardens have been open each year for the NGS ‘Yellow Book’ scheme and have been published in Gardens Illustrated, as well as books and other international publications.
